New cultural and sporting activities are set to launch for older people in the district.

St Albans City and District Council are designing a programme of activities available for those over 65, and are calling on older residents to make their preferences known.

The council will be joined by a number of partners in making the activities available, which could include anything from football to aqua aerobics at Westminster Lodge and other leisure centres.

As well as these activities, the team behind the new £7.75 million museum and art gallery, currently being built into the former town hall, will offer concessions and special performances for older people, while the council's team for parks and green spaces have worked to provide health walks and allotments for older people as well.

Councillor Anthony Rowlands, chairman of the community, environment and sport scrutiny committee, said: "It is important for the physical and mental health of our older people that they are given the chance to participate in activities especially tailored for their needs.

"The council is committed to improving the lifestyles of older residents in the district by organising sporting and cultural activities.

"This is an evolving programme and the committee felt that we need to ensure that it stays in tune with the demands and interests of older people.

"For those reasons, we would like to hear from the over-65s themselves. We want them to explain to us what activities they feel are missing from the Council’s programme or have not been fully developed."
