A man headbutted a railway worker after they caught him smoking on the platform.

He reportedly became “aggressive” and began shouting at and threatening the member of staff as he approached him at St Albans Station at around 5.30pm on September 11.

As he tried to call the police, the man head butted him on the side of the face.

Investigating officer PC Jackie Gray said: “This victim was violently assaulted simply for trying to do his job.

“Luckily the victim managed to steady himself, or else he would have fallen backwards onto the tracks where he could have been seriously injured.

“Offences like this on the rail network are rare and so we are working to establish who the offender is and bring them to justice.”

The British Transport Police are looking to speak to this man who they believe may have information in connection with the assault.
