The crime commissioner has praised a police force for making improvements and “addressing concerns” in its latest inspection report.

Hertfordshire Constabulary has been rated “good” in an Effectiveness report published by Her Majesty’s Inspector of Constabulary, Fire and Rescue Services.

The report says the force quickly addressed failings that were identified last year, including the way vulnerable people are helped when they first contact the police.

David Lloyd said the Hertfordshire force is now good at tackling anti-social behaviour and serious and organised crime.

He said: “This is overall a good result and I’m pleased to see HMICFRS acknowledge the hard work the Constabulary has put in to address the areas of concern in the previous inspection.

“There has been significant investment into the Force Control Room and investigation teams this year, and I hope to see even more progress in the next inspection.

“There are some areas which will need further work and I’ve met with the Chief Constable to discuss how we ensure these are addressed as soon as possible.”

The inspection report added its overall progress over the last year is “positive”, although it needs to improve its approach to protecting vulnerable people further.

The report said: “The force has taken prompt and effective action to address a serious failing that we identified in our 2016 effectiveness inspection. It now identifies vulnerable people effectively when they first contact the police. Subsequent risk assessments are also good.

“However, the force needs to do more to ensure that it has officers and staff with the right skills and expertise to investigate crimes against vulnerable victims and to ensure they are kept safe.

“In particular, the supervision and quality of investigations involving some victims of rape and domestic abuse need to improve. During our inspection, we found examples of vulnerable victims being let down by poor investigative practice and the force has already taken steps to address this.”

Chief Constable Charlie Hall said he believes the force will keep improving.

He said: “I am pleased that the report recognises the improvements that have been made as a result of the hard work and dedication of the Constabulary’s officers, staff and volunteers.

“I am determined that this upward trend will continue.”
