Police probe after man shot dead

12:30pm Sunday 24th August 2008

A 24-year-old man has been shot dead in Birmingham, West Midlands Police said.

The man, who has not been named, was shot at 10.15pm on Saturday in Hockley Close in Newtown, Birmingham.

He was taken to hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Hockley Close has been closed for police investigations and officers have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said they received a call at 10.13pm. They sent an ambulance and a rapid response vehicle to the scene.

The man was taken to City Hospital where he later died, a spokesman said.

He added: "Paramedics from the response vehicle travelled with the ambulance crew and provided additional assistance while the man was treated on route to hospital.

"But unfortunately, despite the best efforts of paramedics and hospital staff, they were unable to save him."

It is the third fatal shooting in the Newtown area in less than a year.
