★ Challenge Six ★ – Putting Something Back Into The Community
In celebration of our Sixth Birthday in September all of our staff have been given the opportunity to give something back to the community by carrying out six hours of voluntary work over a six month period. It’s what the Trust and our Gateway ethos is all about and together all our efforts will make such a positive difference to our local community areas and to ourselves. We are calling this Challenge Six.
There are so many areas to choose from and I am having trouble deciding what to do as I am so interested in quite a few different ideas - the selection is awesome and really varied.
Some of the opportunities are helping out at our Social Enterprises – The Green Canteen or the Cycle Hub. Others are volunteering at Watford 2013 in Leavesden Green on Saturday, 14th September or at Herts Pride in Cassiobury Park on Saturday, 31st August.
There is also Watford Works which is about helping young people get back into work with Watford Football Club’s Community Sports and Education Trust. Did you know that there are nearly 400 unemployed young adults in Watford? The programme helps participants to fulfil their potential, including meeting with business experts. Staff will also be helping out at Watford Foodbank. This is already supported by us with parcels being distributed every week day from Gateway House, providing three days emergency food to local people experiencing hunger.
I don’t get a chance to cook that much but it’s a real passion of mine, so when I saw the chance to help out with cooking for some of our seniors in the local area, I made sure I put my name down for this as well. Some of our staff will help cook Christmas lunch for around 50 people at our new Community Centre in Leavesden Green.
A completely different option is for staff to help with the “Garden Gang”. Where we have some elderly disabled residents who can’t manage their front gardens and staff will have the chance to go along and help tidy them up.
I haven’t included all of our challenges but you can see what a wonderful commitment our staff are making in celebration of our Sixth Birthday and we will keep you updated.
