Watford Foodbank and Challenge 6
Life can be challenging and just living day-to-day can be very difficult for some people due to all kinds of different reasons.
I have been actively involved with the Foodbank since it started in 2012 and during this time volunteers have given out over 1,300 food parcels to local people who are in crisis. Last week, I joined a group of my energetic work colleagues who were volunteers collecting donations at a local supermarket. I arrived at the store bright and early to ask customers to donate just one or two tins to the Foodbank as they went around the store, doing their weekly shop.
There is always a steady flow of customers and I was really busy giving shopping lists to customers suggesting items that they might want to donate. This ranged from tea bags, to baked beans and dried milk. I was absolutely amazed how generous people were, some handing over whole bags of food, whilst others giving a tin. No matter how large or small a donation this all helps to feed local people.
The icing on the cake was a visit by Richard Harrington MP who joined us to show his support and raise awareness for this worthwhile cause. As you can see from the photograph Richard posed with the Trust Team who were volunteering as part of their Challenge 6.
In recognition of our 6th Birthday, our staff have been given the opportunity to give something back to the community by carrying-out six hours of voluntary work over a six month period. Staff have given a pledge to give their own time to worthwhile causes. Together all our efforts will make a positive difference to our local community areas and to ourselves – this has been called ‘Challenge 6’.
You can find out further details about the Foodbank at their website www.watford.foodbank.org.uk – you can donate food or like me, become a volunteer, so give them a call today. Just remember, you could be one payday away from a crisis, so please give your support.
