A patch of sunshine

This morning, dodging showers, I took a short walk through some local gardens to see how they were faring in all the wet weather. Last week I wrote about the lift that mahonias give to the winter garden and how true that is. The paths and grass were littered with autumn leaves, looking rather sad as they lay on the wet ground, hopefully waiting to be swept up and put to good use.

I was particularly interested in the planting in the island beds. Rather bare now that the summer bedding and hardy perennials are over they were brought to life by the yellow foliage plants that had been carefully placed to give maximum impact amongst some darker evergreens.

To me the two that made the most impression were, of course, the mahonias with their lovely scent, and Choisya ternata ‘Sundance’, with its cheerful, bright yellow, glossy evergreen foliage. The colours shone brightly giving a sunny appearance to the garden – lovely.

If you want sunshine in your garden all through the autumn and winter months these are two to look out for.
