November saw the sprouting of moustaches on lots of colleagues faces around the office. Of course, I always like to get in on the act and participate in most events where I can and the thought of not having to shave for a month and have the ragged look really appealed to me. Movember is a charity that raises funds for prostate cancer, testicular cancer and raise awareness for men’s health, and other cancers that affect men.
Everyone started out with a clean-shaven face and then for the rest of the month, groomed, trimmed and waxed their way into fine moustachery. I have to say I am really pleased with mine as it’s the first time I have grown a moustache but it sure does tickle while it is growing.
The funds raised in the UK support the number one and two male specific cancers - prostate and testicular cancer and are directed to programmes run directly by Movember and their men’s health partners, The Prostate Cancer Charity and the Institute of Cancer Research.
What a fantastic way this has been to support this incredible life threatening illness.
Its countdown to Christmas and on Friday 2nd December I will be joining our Community Action Group at the Leavesden Green Community Centre to celebrate their AGM! I could do with some exercise and I am really looking forward to spending the evening boogying the night away with volunteers from all over Watford and Three Rivers at the 70's disco. CAG is going from strength to strength with new groups such as the West Watford Community Association and the Callowland Action Group recently joining. They are also recognised by organisations throughout Watford and Three Rivers providing an opportunity for consultation and partnership working. The group held their last meeting at the Asda Life Community Centre which gave everyone the opportunity to see the facilities they have on offer for all groups to use (free of charge), as well as finding out how groups can apply to Asda for community grants or to be the local good cause that the shop collects money for. Also at the meeting the new Watford Police Neighbourhood Inspector, Deirdre Dent, came along to introduce herself and chat about policing in Watford. An event I am really looking forward to is the Olympics next year and to help celebrate CAG is in the process of organising the biggest community event seen in Watford and Three Rivers in a long time! On Saturday 21st July 2012 community groups and local organisations will join together to mark this historic event. So if YOU would like to be involved please contact Sarah Askey on 01923 209240 or sarah.askey@wcht.org.uk. Do make sure you put the date in your diaries!!
