I met John on at the Brazil World Cup in 2014 - we shared rooms and spent too many hours chatting nonsense. We would head out in search of a beer (preferably one that John had not seen before, I recall he was pleased to find one from Uruguay in one small pub) and something to eat - which was not always easy as John's culinary tastes were pretty conservative. We never did find the pizza we promised ourselves and I'll always smile at us sitting perplexed over a menu and finding separately listed fried eggs and fried potatoes - so egg and chips it was. Watford John as I recall he was called was a wonderful travelling companion. Always willing to search out new 'adventure' and always doing so with a very english cynicism - a quiet smile and that 'well they would wouldn't they' approach. John had a fine intellect and could talk on just about everything - though he specialised in CAMRA politics and the quality of brewing throughout the land, as well as his special subject 'Madame Curie'. I can only be classified as a very peripheral friend but in a quiet way I'll miss him.

Go well John, and thanks. Simon
