Campaigners opposed to plans to sell off a row of garages to make way for potential new homes have launched an online petition urging their council to rethink the proposals.

Some of those living in and near Pinewood Close, Hatch End, want to protect the area from overdevelopment and believe the garages are still of use.

This evening (February 13), Harrow Council’s cabinet will discuss the site as part of a review of the Greater London Authority’s ‘Small Sites Small Builders Programme’.

According to a council report, using this programme increases the chance of securing GLA funding and makes the sites more attractive to the market.

The council has five sites, including the Pinewood Close garages, and recommends that they are passed over to the programme to generate more housing.

In Pinewood Close’s case, it could result in two new homes, while the overall scheme could yield up to eight houses.

Those opposed to the plans accused the council of ignoring the garages “for the past five years” and urged it to revitalise the site in its current state.

They added that there is “no room for extra housing” in the cul-de-sac and it would “cause a loss of light and increase traffic in the area”.
