Rowney Priory was a small religious Abbey

for Benedictine Nuns founded in or around


The Priory ceased to have any religious status at the dissolution of the monasteries in 1535, during the reign of Henry VIII. Subsequently the site went into private ownership and for several centuries it was a farmhouse. Thereafter several notable

people such as the Irish Composer Sir Michael William Balfe (best known for his Opera The Bohemian Girl) resided here between 1864 - 1874. In 1882 it was purchased by Mr J H Dugdale who

commenced significant change and by the turn of the 20th century the building and gardens as we see them today had been created.
