Heartfelt messages of congratulations and deep appreciation have been posted in gratitude to a much-loved retired Watford midwife and hospice supporter who was recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Elizabeth Timmons was awarded the British Empire Medal for her services to terminally ill patients, having helped raise money for the Peace Hospice since it was founded 30 years ago.

Although she is now 85, Elizabeth continues to volunteer at the Inpatient Unit, but she is also a highly popular and respected figure in the community for her career as a midwife which lasted more than 45 years and saw her deliver thousands of babies.

We asked you to send in your messages of congratulations to Elizabeth when we reported her honour last week. Including messages from as far afield as Germany and the USA, this is what you posted:

Your message to ElizabethDear Elizabeth, I’m absolutely delighted for you! My late Grandpa was awarded the BEM and it was he that taught me all the old songs that I sing as “Victoria Sponge” at your fundraising events so it seems even more perfect that you have been awarded the same honour because you are as kind, funny and inspiring as Grandpa was. You truly deserve this honour - you’re one of life’s best people and I’m honoured to know you. Much love from Karen Bell aka Victoria Sponge xxxxx

Your message to ElizabethCongratulations, so well deserved! You delivered my firstborn in 1990 and she has your name as her middle name - I'd had a difficult labour when you breezed in saying "right, let's get this baby born". Sure enough, 90 minutes later Charlotte Elizabeth entered the world. My little girl now has 3 little girls of her own.................. Thank you.

Your message to ElizabethI can't think of a more deserved award. I worked alongside Elizabeth in Watford maternity early 2000s. She was adored by everyone for her caring nature and was missed when she finally retired. I attended her fabulous garden parties where the tea was served in real China cups and saucers. What a beautiful lady she is inside and out. Sandy Brown, Nursery Nurse.

Your message to ElizabethDear Elizabeth, many congratulations on being awarded the well deserved British Empire Medal. Both my children attended your Play Group and it gave them both a good start in life. You haven’t changed. You still look the same as you did all those years ago, a little older perhaps with that amazing hair and lovely twinkly eyes. What an amazing life. Thank you so much. ❤️

Your message to ElizabethMy dear sweet and amazing Elizabeth, I was so pleased to see you in Watford a week ago, and to reminisce a little about how we met and the friendship you had with my dear late mum and dad Rosemary and Ken Masters they truly enjoyed their time spent with you and kindness to me when you delivered my son John on the 16th September 1988, it was the most amazing time and you were so kind and passionate in bringing my baby boy into the world of which I will be truly grateful for as being guided by you through his labour was born safely after having the cord wrapped around his neck and you knew he had to be delivered quickly and with no stitches too. I am so proud that you have been recognised for all your care and unconditional love in everything you set your heart on to achieve. You so deserve this wonderful award Elizabeth and I hope our paths cross again as you still have so much love and support for all you meet. Please take care and enjoy this special time. Much love Janice xxx
