Heartfelt messages of congratulations and deep appreciation have been posted in gratitude to a much-loved retired Watford midwife and hospice supporter who was recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
Although she is now 85, Elizabeth continues to volunteer at the Inpatient Unit, but she is also a highly popular and respected figure in the community for her career as a midwife which lasted more than 45 years and saw her deliver thousands of babies.
We asked you to send in your messages of congratulations to Elizabeth when we reported her honour last week. Including messages from as far afield as Germany and the USA, this is what you posted:

My late Grandpa was awarded the BEM and it was he that taught me all the old songs that I sing as “Victoria Sponge” at your fundraising events so it seems even more perfect that you have been awarded the same honour because you are as kind, funny and inspiring as Grandpa was. Your message to ElizabethCongratulations Elizabeth. I was born in Inchigeela in 1939. I emigrated to England. I worked in London, Gillingham, Kent, Hemel Hempstead, Wantage, Berkshire, and Cardiff Wales, prior to emigrating to America in 1960. Iam proud of you. I am a registered nurse, BSN, in Massachusetts, USA. After I retired from flying airplanes I went to the university of Massachusetts, Boston, and studied for four years; I graduated with a BSN, nursing. Nursing is a tough, rewarding career. My first son, Patrick, was born at home in the kitchen on St. Patrick's day no less. He now has a family of his own in New Hampshire USA. He is a master electrician Watford, my sister, Peggy had her first job there.

She was adored by everyone for her caring nature and was missed when she finally retired. I attended her fabulous garden parties where the tea was served in real China cups and saucers. Your message to ElizabethMy dear sweet and amazing Elizabeth, I was so pleased to see you in Watford a week ago, and to reminisce a little about how we met and the friendship you had with my dear late mum and dad Rosemary and Ken Masters they truly enjoyed their time spent with you and kindness to me when you delivered my son John on the 16th September 1988, it was the most amazing time and you were so kind and passionate in bringing my baby boy into the world of which I will be truly grateful for as being guided by you through his labour was born safely after having the cord wrapped around his neck and you knew he had to be delivered quickly and with no stitches too. I am so proud that you have been recognised for all your care and unconditional love in everything you set your heart on to achieve. You so deserve this wonderful award Elizabeth and I hope our paths cross again as you still have so much love and support for all you meet. Please take care and enjoy this special time.
