There are few names that were as synonymous with the High Street as Woolworths, making it one of the most popular destinations for Christmas shoppers in Watford down the years.
Many of us will be visiting the town centre to buy our gifts in the build up to December 25, but many of the shops we remember fondly have changed or disappeared altogether.

With the help of Watford Museum and its volunteer archivist Christine Orchard, we are looking back at some of those favourite shops and High Street scenes so many of us remember as the countdown to Christmas Day continues.
FW Woolworth and Co’s first shop in Watford town centre was at 124 High Street and it is pictured in the wonderful old picture at the top of this page.
During a modernisation programme, a new shop was built on the corner of King Street and High Street, where McDonald’s now is.
