Our memories of scenes from Watford town centre in the past have so far focused on specific shops, but today’s picture is a more general view of the lower end of the High Street that many of you will remember.
Many of us will be visiting the town centre to buy our gifts in the build up to December 25, but many of the shops we remember fondly have changed or disappeared altogether.

With the help of Watford Museum and its volunteer archivist Christine Orchard, we are looking back at some of those favourite shops and High Street scenes so many of us remember as the countdown to Christmas Day continues.
Today’s picture dates from July 1995 and was taken from near the entrance to the churchyard, capturing a view of two very well-known High Street names, Marks & Spencer and a little further up on the right, another part of a store chain that shut down, British Home Stores.
