Yesterday’s memory of Watford town centre recalled Clements before the flyover was built. Today we remember how the popular former department store could be seen from the road after its construction in the early 1970s.

Many of us will be visiting the town centre to buy our gifts in the build up to December 25, but many of the shops we remember fondly have changed or disappeared altogether.

With the help of Watford Museum and its volunteer archivist Christine Orchard, we are looking back at some of those favourite shops and High Street scenes so many of us remember as the countdown to Christmas Day continues.

Established in 1898, Clements remains a huge part of Watford’s history following its closure in 2004. This picture was taken from the flyover in 1986 looking in the direction of Clarendon Road.
