Health inspectors have told a Polish supermarket that it must improve its food hygiene after it was given one of the lowest ratings in Watford.

Polski Sklep Nieus, in High Street, is now rated 1/5 after Watford Borough Council inspectors judged its management of food safety needed ‘major improvement’.

The category includes the shop's system to ensure food is safe to eat, staff’s knowledge of food safety, and inspectors' belief that standards will be maintained in future.

The supermarket did however receive ‘generally satisfactory’ ratings for both its hygienic food handling as well as the cleanliness and condition of its facilities.

The owner Remi Dybowski said the shop had been let down by problems with the water pressure to a sink and its hot water boiler.

He said the issues have now been fixed, adding: "I am going to order a re-inspection and I am confident we will be raised to five stars."

The result of the inspection carried out on June 11, and revealed last week, means the shop has joined the ranks of 12 Watford shops and eateries currently rated 1/5.

None are currently rated 0/5, the worst score possible, after two businesses both shook off their ‘urgent improvement necessary’ notices.

Kamu Street Food in St Albans Road jumped to 3/5 after it was visited on July 12, while Panda Oriental in Vicarage Road has been raised to 1/5 following an inspection on June 5, although it remains closed.
