Plenty of well-known athletes have competed at Woodside Stadium since it opened in 1955, but 35 years ago it was taken over by the cast and crew of a much-loved children’s television programme.
A Watford Observer photographer was present on October 18, 1989 to capture the Watford athletics track being used as the location for some scenes from the BBC drama Grange Hill.
The character Mike Bentley, played by Rene Zagger, appears to have been at the centre of the storyline, as he was filmed ‘competing’ on the track, cheered on by dozens of pupils and staff from the fictional North London school.
We previously published archive pictures of filming for the programme taking place in our area when some scenes were shot at Bushey Hall School, now the Grange Academy, in May 1994.

First aired in 1978, Grange Hill ran for 31 series until it was cancelled by the BBC in 2008.
