An Abbots Langley man has expressed concerns over unfinished work to pavements, which he claims is a danger to elderly residents.

Barney Davis initially complained about the uneven stretch of pavement in the High Street in February last year after an elderly woman tripped outside his front door.

In August, a company previously contracted by Hertfordshire County Council to maintain roads, resurfaced the pavements stretching from the Crescent to the Budgens store, however the spot where the woman tripped remains untouched.

Mr Davis, who has lived in the village for 30 years, said he is tired of contacting the county council and Ringway- the new contractor- to find out why the 45 metre stretch outside his house has not been resurfaced.

The 72-year-old said: "I first noticed the state of the pavements when a woman knocked on my door after she had tripped outside.

"She was shaken and asked for a glass of water. I thought I must do something about this.

"After months of complaints they finally came to sort out the problem, which I was very pleased about. However they left without completing the job."

After making contact with the county council and Ringway, Mr Davis was informed the job had been signed off.

He added: "It is nonsense - signed off means the work is finished, but it isn’t finished. I don’t understand why they would agree to come out and do the job, but not complete it.

"It is particularly frustrating because they have left the part of the road I complained about."

Mr Davis said he is also concerned for his 92-year-old mother-in-law who regularly comes to visit. Only a few months ago, he says he had to stop her from falling outside his front door.

Mr Davis said: "It was lucky I was there to stop her falling. It is getting to me and makes no sense.

"Hundreds of elderly people with zimmer frames and walking sticks who have to get to the shops or doctors pass this pavement from the three residential homes we have nearby.

"My concern is the mystery over why it hasn’t been completed. If you pay to have work completed in your house and they don’t finish the job, you simply wouldn’t pay for it."

Abbots Langley county councillor Paul Goggins dedicated £18,500 of his locality budget towards the resurfacing work of the pavement after receiving complaints from Mr Davis and other residents.

The cash comes from the county council’s locality budget.

He said: "This stretch of pavement was the first on my list of priorities and I will keep nagging and complaining to the contractors until this is sorted out."

Hertfordshire County Council is currently investigating the situation.
