A celeb-filled event in a Watford bar has landed its owners in the courts this week after police charged them with breaching the terms of their licence.

Richard Valentine and Alison Brown, who ran Paparazzi in The Parade, are accused of committing an offence by not having a working ID scanner on site during the Musik 4 You event last October.

During the event, which was spread across several venues in the town, stars from TV’s Made in Chelsea, The Only Way is Essex and Geordie Shore mingled with fans inside the venue.

Among them were television presenter Mark Wright and celebrity DJ Lauren Pope.

Ms Brown is also charged with a related offence of obstructing a police officer in the execution of their duty on November 13 by presenting them with an allegedly false list of names and addresses for people who attended the event.

Mr Valentine is chairman of Watford Pubwatch while Ms Brown is the group’s secretary and both appeared at St Albans Magistrates Court on Tuesday (February 26) to deny the charges.

Mr Sutherland, for the defendants, said: “The joint matter involves the allegation they were in breach of their premises licence. The issue is in relation to the ID scanner and whether it was installed.

“The prosecution alleges the list of names and addresses, which was provided was put forward by Ms Brown to mislead the police.

“I think it’s accepted that there was no ID scanner working on this particular occasion, the argument would be about the interpretation of this particular section.

“It is not accepted there was any wilful obstruction of the police officer.

“It is the defence case that there was no need to obstruct an officer and there was no wilful obstruction of an officer.”

But an application from the defence for the two charges to be tried separately was rejected by District Judge Annabel Pilling.

Crown prosecutor Mark Fleckney told the court: “It all comes from an event that occurred, it caused a number of problems to the police.

“A few days later there was a meeting between the police and licensees at which a list was handed up but the defendants were aware the ID scanner wasn’t working.”

The pair, both of St Michael’s Road, Ashford, Middlesex, were arrested on December 12 and police charged them on February 14.

Company records show Mr Valentine left his role as a director of Komplete Hospitality, the parent company behind Paparazzi, the following day.

They will return to the court to stand trial on April 24.
