The jury in the case of former Watford FC striker Darius Henderson has been discharged by the judge.
Judge Martin Griffith told the five men and seven women at St Albans crown court that the case could not continue because a witness was unavailable, working on a sheep farm in Australia.
Mr Henderson, 31, who previously played for Watford and Millwall, and lives in Markyate, Herts, denies causing grievous bodily harm to John Bell at Darcy's restaurant in St Albans on New Year's Day 2012.
No new date has been fixed for the trial.
