A Croxley Green school has objected to politicians' plans to expand it by 30 places.

A report to Hertfordshire County Council's cabinet said the governing body of Yorke Mead Primary School opposes its expansion plans because of a lack of additional "core facilities".

Governors argue they need improved facilities such as a hall and dining room, specialist subject classrooms, entrance and lobby, and staff room to cope with extra pupils.

The objections come as the council's cabinet is set to vote on plans to expand 13 primary schools in Hertfordshire, including three in the Watford area, today.

The Conservative-controlled council has drawn up a £30 million-scheme to head off a looming shortage of primary school places in the county.

The current plans would see Central School in Watford, Oxhey Wood School in South Oxhey enlarged to take on new pupils as well as Yorke Mead School.

Both Central and Yorke Mead are set to be expanded by 30 pupils while Oxhey Wood would expand by nine.

Education officials said Yorke Mead was the only school to raise objections to the expansion proposals in the county.

In a report to the executive, Pauline Davis, head of school planning, said: "There continues to be a real and pressing need to provide primary school places across Hertfordshire.

"Not providing the premises to allow additional places to be offered will mean that very young children may be forced to access places some considerable distance from their homes."
