Politicians have approved the permanent expansion of a Croxley Green primary school.

Yorke Mead Primary School will take an additional 30 pupils from September next year, Hertfordshire County councillors agreed at a cabinet meeting.

The Dulwich Way school has been temporarily expanded in the past and this latest decision will see the school’s intake double permanently from September 2014.

The move is part of a countywide programme with an investment of over £21 million which should lead to the creation of 249 extra permanent places at 13 schools across the county.

Chris Hayward, cabinet member enterprise, education and skills, said: "Like many other local authorities, Hertfordshire is in a challenging position with a significant rise in the number of children registered with GPs who will require primary school places within the next few years.

"The proposed 2014 programme will enable us to provide the right number of places in the right location while making sure that the expansions are affordable and maintain the quality of our schools."

Some objections were sent to the council in response to the expansion proposals.

Some of these concerns included an insufficient amount of core facilities, including those for dining and play.

Objections were also submitted to council officers about the potential for unacceptable levels of traffic and parking congestion the expansion would entail.
