The 128-year-old disused Bushey Police Station could be converted into new homes.

Since 1884, and up until the station’s closure in 2011, all the buildings on the site in Sparrows Herne were part of the local police station.

However, the grade II listed building became unfit for purpose and financial pressures on the force led to its closure in 2011 - moving services to the station in Watford.

The plan, submitted by Squaredale (Monmouth) Ltd, in September, would be to convert it into incorporate three two-bedroom self contained flats and a two story detached three-bedroom house. The house would be provided with a private garden and the maisonettes would have two areas of communal amenity space.

Aspire Architects LLP, the company that designed the plans, proposed that the building be converted into four residential units.

A spokesperson said: "The location of the site is most suitable for redevelopment into residential accommodation due to its position along a significant transport corridor within one of the existing built up areas identified in Hertsmere Borough Council’s Core Strategy.

"This is demonstrative of the site’s proximity to existing services and transport routes, both public and private - the particular immediacy of bus stops on Sparrow’s Herne should be noted.

"The planned development proposes a viable and sensitive re-use of the heritage assets which will improve their setting through the removal of unattractive additions and provision of new landscaping.

"However, if the application is not approved the future of the assets will remain insecure.

Bushey North representative councillor Leslie Winters, said it would be good to see the building in use again.

Councillor Winters added: "The building has been out of use for around two years now, and it is a good idea to use it to build more residential areas.

"It was not a great location for the police to be based, there was no parking and people used the main offices in Borehamwood.

"Before it was closed, while there was some objection, when asked if people used it the reply was no."

Bushey’s police station has not been the only closure in recent years. Stations in Westland Road, Watford, the police office in the intu Watford shopping centre and Rickmansworth station were closed to help meet a £36 million funding gap.

The move in Bushey was heavily criticised by residents and councillors at the time, over fears the village would be left without a visible police force.

To date, the council has received 13 letters of objection to the proposed plans.
