The driver of a dustcart that crashed into the side of a West Watford builders’ merchants this morning has been taken to hospital.

Firefighters were called to Jewson, in Queens Avenue, at 11.16am following reports that a waste disposal lorry had gone into the building.

Initial reports were that the driver was still inside the vehicle. However, upon arrival the Borehamwood crew found that no-one was trapped.

Police and the ambulance service were also called to the scene.

Jewson branch manager, Sam Williamson, said the lorry belonged to the builders’s merchants’s waste disposal company, Biffa.

Mr Williamson said: “The lorry driver attempted to drive through the warehouse with the lifting mechanism in a raised position.

“This has brought a concrete beam weighing several tones crashing down on to the vehicle.”

Watford Observer:

The driver of the cart has been taken to Watford General Hospital with what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

The branch was temporarily closed for about two hours and the area around the building has been cornered off to allow a survey of the premises to take place.
