Bushey Academy is planning to build a new primary school with 60 places for September 2015, in response to the shortage of primary places in south west Hertfordshire.

Bushey Primary Academy would be a newly built facility, accessed by foot from Grange Road or by car from Falconer Road, built on the land to the rear of the existing secondary academy.

It would be a two form entry school admitting pupils to reception from September 2015, and eventually growing to 420 places.

The academy needs to get the support of a number of parents to say they would be interested in sending their children to the school to gain funding from the Department of Education. The Bushey Academy was recently named the most improved school in Hertfordshire and the 35th most imported in the whole country.

The primary school would share the educational vision of The Bushey Academy and would aim to open in September 2015.

Headmaster Andrew Hemmings said: "Now we have established ourselves as a successful and oversubscribed secondary school, we are keen to open at primary level. The intention is for that to happen in September 2015.

"We know that we can develop award winning buildings, provide transformational education, and that parents and pupils rate The Bushey Academy very highly indeed.

"The opportunity to extend the ‘Proud to Belong’ ethos of The Bushey Academy to younger children is extremely exciting."

The lead proposer for The Bushey Primary Academy is David Mellor - the chair of The Meller Educational Trust, which supports The Bushey Academy, Watford UTC, Hertswood Academy and Elstree UTC.

Shivaunne Booth, a spokesperson at Hertfordshire county council, said: "In principle, the county council has recognised the benefits of all through schools and has supported similar proposals elsewhere in the county.

"Bushey Academy has outlined the catchment area for its proposed primary phase and has indicated that it will include the neighbouring areas of Oxhey and Watford, where traditionally there has been a need for additional school places.

"The County Council is currently reviewing options if additional school places are required in the interim for the above primary planning areas.

"The Department of education is the decision maker for Bushey Academy's application. If it is approved, any requirements for capital works on the school site will be funded via the Education Funding Agency."

Pupils from the academy were out today at the intu Watford to begin promoting the primary school and hand out flyers to parents. Parents and members of the community are invited tso email any questions to primary@thebusheyacademy.org.
