Residents and councillors are opposing plans by Taylor Wimpey to develop new homes on land off Woodside Road on the north-eastern edge of Abbots Langley.

The proposed development site is currently an agricultural field used for grazing and comprises an area in the region of 10.5 acres.

Martin Brooks, Liberal Democrat councillor for Leavesden, said: "It’s an over development and not doing anything to help infrastructure in this area. It’s not appropriate and not needed. The plans have not been thought through. It’s bizarre.

"Additionally, what they’re showing us is nothing to do with the plans."

A pre-application document submitted last Friday to the council stated the housebuilder’s intention to build 123 homes, but leaflets sent out to residents said in the region of 140 homes.

The land was also programmed for possible development between 2016-2021 but Taylor Wimpey may build earlier.

Isobel Rowe of Meadowside said: "We have an amazing view from our kitchen looking out onto the field. But sadly there's nothing we can do about the decision of the development happening now.

"My main concerns are over when the development is going to happen and whether there will be adequate parking and traffic measures put in place."

The proposed application site adjoins land also belonging to Taylor Wimpey. Part of this adjoining area is expected to be allocated to a primary school.

Councillor Brooks said: "There are already three schools in the area. Children will be coming to this school from elsewhere, creating more traffic and further parking problems, making the roads more unsafe. The councillors in this area don’t support these plans in any shape or form."

Hannah Pattinson, Strategic Land Project Manager for Taylor Wimpey, said: " At present, we do not have an exact figure for the number of homes we are planning for the site. Feedback from Three Rivers District Council will help determine the final numbers for any subsequent planning application. We anticipate receiving this feedback prior to our public consultation event.

"Should we receive planning consent, we do not anticipate that homes will be occupied prior to 2016.

"Taylor Wimpey is responsible for providing access and services to the proposed school site, however, the school is not part of this proposal. It is Hertfordshire County Council's responsibility to build the school, but the land will be provided by Taylor Wimpey."

Stephen Giles-Medhurst, Liberal Democrat councillor for Leavesden, said: "I have spoken to Three Rivers officers who believe that the application in 2014 is premature and might be able to be rejected on those grounds. The plans have also failed to show the building of the school.

"Despite what Taylor Wimpey say they have not had extensive discussions with the county council regarding access to the development.

"In any event, I and other Leavesden councillors will be putting forward a number of concerns about the plans.

"We urge residents to attend the exhibition."

Taylor Wimpey plan to hold a public exhibition at Woodside Community Centre from 2pm until 8pm on Thursday, October 2.
