Slavisa Jokanovic stressed Watford must improve despite today’s 3-1 victory over Millwall moving his team top of the Championship.

The Hornets are two points clear in the Championship and are unbeaten in nine matches.

But their head coach stressed: “I am happy because we won three points but it’s important for us to improve.”

The Golden Boys started today’s match superbly but then initially struggled to retain possession after Millwall’s opening goal on 12 minutes.

Watford were arguably fortunate to go into the break ahead but were then relatively comfortable as they beat Ian Holloway’s side 3-1.

Watford Observer:

Jokanovic said: “I am very happy because my team won three points. I am especially happy because we had a very good reaction after the Millwall goal. These three points are very important for us. I believe we can improve; we can still play better.”

He continued: “We had some problems at the beginning. And after these problems at the beginning of the game and after Millwall scored the goal, step by step we started improving and we had a good reaction.”

Daniel Tozser’s goal just before the break, which made it 2-1, changed the dynamics of the match.

Jokanovic believes referee Robert Madley should have handed Watford a greater advantage by sending off defender Alan Dunne in the build-up to Tozser’s goal.

Watford Observer:

The Serbian said: “From my situation it was a penalty and a sending off but I haven’t seen it on the TV. But from my position it was very clear that it should have been a sending off and penalty.”

Jokanovic explained that he asked his team to press the opposition more and increase their aggression at half-time. But after that didn’t happen, he changed the system to ensure his team remained compact.

The 46-year-old also confirmed Ikechi Anya missed the match through injury and added “I believe in a few days he will be ready to help us”.
