Two pupils from Watford Grammar School for Girls have been highly commended in a national geography award.

Anisha Mehta, in the 11 to 14 category, and Maitanki Sutharson, 16 to 18 category, were honoured in the Royal Geographical Society and Geographical magazine’s Young Geographer of the Year competition.

The awards were presented by Nicholas Crane, in a special ceremony at the society’s headquarters in Kensington, London, on November 28.

For this year’s competition, pupils nationwide were asked ‘How can geography help you?’

The entry from Anisha looked at sustainability and she developed her ideas through an interactive game, whilst Maitanki tackled the idea of global development.

Steve Brace, head of education at the Royal Geographical Society, said: "The society congratulates the pupils of Watford Grammar School for Girls on their deserved award.

"We were delighted with the quality of entries this year, and were particularly impressed to see our young geographers, like Anisha and Maitanki, demonstrating the relevance of geography to many aspects of their lives, be it at the local or global scale."
