A car crashed into a tree before rolling on to its roof at 1.30am on Monday.
The accident occurred in Hempstead Road, Kings Langley, and the road had to be closed while emergency services attended the scene.
The male driver, of the silver Vauxhall Zafira, was trapped in the car and had to cut free by the fire crew.
The driver was taken to St Mary's Hospital in London with serious injuries.
His car was recovered at 4.40am and the road reopened at 5.45am.
