Hertfordshire County Council has revised its plans to implement a one-way system along Vicarage Road near Laurance Haines Primary School following feedback given during a public consultation.

The plans had proposed the introduction of a one-way system for traffic in Vicarage Road heading north towards the town centre between Scammell Way and Hagden Lane, as well as the removal of the traffic lights on the railway bridge.

However, following a consultation with residents and road users at the end of last year, the scheme has now been amended so that the one-way section will now run from just south of the railway bridge to Rose Gardens.

The initial scheme had also proposed a signalised pedestrian crossing in Vicarage Road, which was planned to benefit children walking and cycling to Laurance Haines Primary School, and for users of the proposed new Vicarage Road tube station.

Rob Smith, deputy director of environment at Hertfordshire County Council, said the scheme had been changed after concerns were raised about a possible increase in traffic through Hagden Lane and Tolpits Lane.

He said: "We have listened to the concerns of residents of Stripling Way and Rose Gardens about not having two-way access on to Vicarage Road from their homes and have therefore reduced the stretch of road which will be one-way.

"There were also concerns about a possible increase in traffic in Hagden Lane and Tolpits Lane.

"We believe that the shortened one-way section will help, but we do try to keep as much through traffic on the A road network as possible rather than local roads.

"Reducing traffic volumes on this section of Vicarage Road will improve access and safety for road users and pedestrians."

Mr Smith added the revised proposal is designed to complement the planned Vicarage Road station by accommodating the anticipated increased pedestrian footfall and number of cyclists.

A further three-week consultation will take place to consider the amended proposals, starting in late April.

Information regarding the consultation will be distributed to residents living in the areas affected, and posted on lamp posts in Vicarage Road.
