An uncle who has taken on five fundraising challenges in memory of his nephew has completed his third event.

Ross Coniam, of Norbury Avene, Watford has been taking up the challenges throughout the year to raise money for the hospice that supported his nephew, Kieran Coniam.

Kieran, who passed away last October aged just ten, suffered from a series of health problems, including cerebral palsy, epilepsy and "global development delay" syndrome.

In 2014, he caught pneumonia twice and was admitted to hospital on both occasions. He was then diagnosed with pseudomonas, a bacteria which effects the lungs. But due to Kieran's weak immune system, he found it hard to fight the bacteria, and as a result his health deteriorated suddenly.

In January, Mr Coniam pledged to complete five challenges to raise money for Keech Hospice Care in Luton, where Kieran spent many of his days.

He completed his third challenge - a 100km row at the end of last month.

The 32-year-old completed the rowing challenge over two days with his uncle Steve, and three cousins Dean, Mike and Phil. The group rowed from Boston to Lincoln and back again, which took them approximately 13 hours.

Mr Coniam, who works as a senior expenses analysis at KPMG, said: "The river row was a gruelling challenge - lots of blisters and muscle pain for the whole team.

"None of us had ever been in a rowing boat prior to April this year, so to complete the 100km was a great achievement, which we are all proud to have completed."

The group, who were supported by STAR Rowing club in Bedford, only trained together in a boat four times before doing the challenge.

Mr Coniam added: "It was sometimes difficult to get all of the team together to train. I also personally injured my wrist four weeks leading up to the big event, which hindered my training somewhat."

So far, Mr Coniam has raised £4,700 for the hospice. Initially he said he wanted to raise £1,000 per challenge and now, with two challenges remaining Mr Coniam is hoping to push through the £5,000 mark.

He said: "I would like to say how thankful I am to everyone for their support over the past few months. As everyone knows, I am doing this to raise money in support of many families in of need aftercare when losing loved ones."

Mr Coniam completed the London Marathon in April and the London to Brighton walk in May.

Today (Friday, September 4), he will be setting off to complete the 24 hour Three Peaks Challenge and the following week will complete a sky dive as his final challenge.
