Politicians, colleagues and friends have paid tribute to a former councillor who will be remembered as one of the "loveliest" man in politics.

Hertfordshire Borough Councillor Steve O'Brien died on Saturday night as a result of a blood infection.

The representative for Bushey North had been battling cancer for some time and in August this year suffered a stroke.

Mr O'Brien, who was recently made an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours for voluntary political service, had been an elected councillor since 1998.

He was a member of Watford Borough Council before moving to Hertsmere Borough Council to represent Bushey North.

In 2009 he also became a county councillor and during his time he served on a number of committees and panels including the health scrutiny committee and the highways and transport cabinet panel.

The father of two and grandfather, who completed his final term as a borough councillor in May this year, also served as chairman of the Watford Conservative Association for more than 10 years.

Conservative group leader of Watford Borough Council Cllr Binita Mehta described Mr O'Brien as "one of the loveliest people in politics".

She said: "Since I became involved in politics he was always around to help in any way he could. From helping me erect posterboards around Park ward to strategic advice - he would always drive over or take a call.

"Despite his age and ailments, he always had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. I am devastated and will miss him dearly. I wish his amazing, supportive family the utmost strength to deal with this sad loss."

Cllr Morris Bright, leader of Hertsmere Borough Council, said: "Steve was a hardworking councillor and respected colleague to everyone on his Conservative group and across Hertsmere Borough Council.

"He was a fighter to the end, battling a number of serious health conditions. I’d like to take this opportunity to pass on my condolences to Steve’s family at this sad time."

As councillor of Bushey North, Mr O'Brien supported many fundraisers and activities put on by schools.

Highwood School's chairman of governors Rita Mitchell said: "On behalf of Highwood School Bushey, I would like to express the sadness we feel to learn of the death of Steve O'Brien.

"He was a very generous with his time and interest in our school and his support for fundraising activities was much appreciated.

"He will be missed."

Robert Gordon, leader of Hertfordshire County Council, offered his condolences: "I am saddened to hear of Steve’s death who was not only a colleague but also a friend.

"Steve was a very thoughtful and committed representative of his constituents and he will be sorely missed. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time."

A minute's silence was held at a county council meeting on Tuesday in memory of Cllr O'Brien.
