A Mount Everest expedition leader talked to Watford business people about the leadership skills that helped him climb the world's greatest summit.
Ian Woodall was in Watford this week to speak about how these skills could help them in their businesses.
At the event, organised by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, Mr Woodall said he'd led five expeditions to Mount Everest - reaching the summit of two occasions.
During his first ascent Mr Woodall’s team were trapped at 8,000 metres in the worst storm in Everest history which claimed the lives of five fellow climbers.
After the trauma and tragedy of the storm Mr Woodall and his team tried again, finally reaching the summit as the only ones left on the mountain.
He said: "When climbing mountains you can take tremendous strength from being part of a team but forward progress is an individual effort.
"No person can climb a mountain for another.
"It is vital to be able to lead yourself before you can lead others.
"Being clear of your own goals is essential before you can help others achieve theirs."
