Master chefs of the future put their culinary skills to the test as they competed in a hard-fought cooking competition.

Ten budding young hopefuls, all representing secondary schools in south west Hertfordshire, took part in the eighth annual Watford Rotary Young Chef of the Year competition at West Herts College.

The contestants impressed a panel of judges made up of Russell Bateman, head chef at The Grove’s Collette’s restaurant, and the senior chef lecturers from the college.

With a budget of £10, contestants were asked to buy all of the ingredients needed to make their healthy dish and dessert.

Jessica Perry, who attends Watford Grammar School for Girls, won first prize of a dinner for four at Collette’s and she will now go on to represent Watford at the Rotary Club’s regional event in the spring – competing against other winners from the Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire rounds.

Second place was shared by Isobel Clarke from Queen’s School Bushey, Ellie Kendal from Watford Grammar School for Girls and Ruby Owens from St Albans Girls School. Other schools represented on the day included, Bushey Meads, St. Joan of Arc School and Rickmansworth School.

Food Academy programme co-ordinator Andrew Wakeford was on hand to offered advice and judge the dishes.

He said: “It’s fantastic to see budding young chefs from local schools given the opportunity to demonstrate their culinary skills and knowledge.

“The standard of this year’s entries has been high compared to previous years, with three or four outstanding dishes presented being presented.”
