Plans to build 95 new homes on the site of a former job centre in Watford have been submitted.

Watford Borough Council has received plans for 95 flats on the site of Caledonian House, in West Street.

But councillors for Nascot said concerned residents are objecting to the size of the scheme as "inappropriate for the area".

The plans are to demolish the existing building and construct the new flats with basement parking, a communal garden and private balcony.

Ralph Darvill, who lives in Nascot Street, objected to the plans on the council's planning portal: "I am flabbergasted by the scale of this proposal. It is too high. It was my understanding that only four storey development was to be allowed on that side of St Albans Road, or that was the basis under which we objected to the original Caledonian House and the adjacent flats on the corner of Malden/ St Albans Road.

"Just as Sentinel House blighted the lives and property values of the residents of St John's Road, this building will do the same to the residents of the lower end of Malden Road, impinging on privacy, blocking out light and just being ridiculously scaled in a low rise Victorian-era residential area.

"Please send this back to the developers with a big red 'refused' stamp on it."

But Jessica Morgan said the application should be approved as it would add "much needed" new homes for the young professionals to be able get a foothold on the property ladder.

She added: "The design of the building will greatly enhance the local area replacing the current building which is currently and eyesore and not in use. A scheme of this stature would be great for the community and add another fantastic feature to this ever improving borough."

Nascot councillor Mark Hofman attended the developers consultation at the Park Inn hotel and canvassed residents' views on the proposals.

He said that although the new scheme has been reduced in size by ten flats, the new plans will undoubtedly affect the quality of life for those neighbouring the proposed development.

He said: "The new building will be considerably larger than the Cassio apartments at the end of Malden Road and twice the size of the current structure causing the loss of light to some gardens surrounding the development.

"I will be lobbying the council to further reduce the scale of the development and request that the tree screen bordering the residential properties be retained to protect the local residents privacy.

"Whatever may or may not be built in the future we will ensure that a considerate development plan is enforced by the council, the site is on a busy trade route and potential disruption will have to be carefully considered by the development management committee."

Residents have until November 30 to submit their objections to the council via email to developmentcontrol@watford.gov.uk or on the UK Planning portal where residents can view the plans and leave comments.

Should the council receive five or more objections to the scheme, the plans will be considered by councillors on the development management committee in January 2016.
