Award-winning film studios, a Premier League football team, attractive parks.

You would think having all of that would make Watford a town to be proud of.

However, The Grove - which is currently hosting The British Masters - refuses to acknowledge it is in Watford – despite having a WD postcode.

Staff at the site in Chandler's Cross, Watford, reportedly asked presenters on BBC Radio 2 to say the club was in Hertfordshire rather than in Watford when discussing the golf.

Speaking today on Chris Evans daily breakfast show, presenter Vassos Alexander said: “You come off the M25 and drive past a ‘Welcome to Watford’ sign and then reach the golf club. Surely that means it’s in Watford?”

Even Google maps acknowledge The Grove as being in Watford.

The club even tries to claim a London locaion on its Twitter page (below).

Watford Observer:

Readers have been arguing about the exact location all week. One wrote: “The Grove is in Watford and not Chandlers Cross.

"That is the other side of the Hunton Bridge roundabout. Clarendon Arms pub as it was is there. Snobby Grove and Golf.”

Another added: “If the Grove's PR people want to lie, it's up to them - but we don't have to believe them.”

This isn’t the first time the town has been forgotten.

Last week, Sadiq Khan was quoted as saying Star Wars was filmed in London.

After visiting Barking and Dagenham to see how the borough is cultivating culture and attracting artists, the mayor said: “From James Bond and Star Wars to Harry Potter and Bridget Jones’s Baby, London has a vibrant production history and some of the best studios in the world.”

The eight Harry Potter films were filmed in Leavesden Studios and the original Star Wars trilogy was shot at Elstree Studios – both in Hertfordshire, not London.

Watford Observer:

However, the Harry Potter studios claim it is in London, when in fact it is in Leavesden.

Watford has been earmarked for major new transport infrastructure, which will provide better access to areas previously poorly served.

There are also approved plans for a £100million revamp to turn the dowdy Charter Place arcade at the heart of the High Street into a leisure and shopping centre with a multiplex cinema.

A number of companies, including Camelot Group, Warner Bros and TK Maxx, have their head offices here.

And Watford has its fair share of glitz; former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell hails from here.

What will it take for The Grove to acknowledge its location?
