Schoolchildren spent a day learning about an Islamic festival marking the end of Ramadan.

The pupils at Beechfield School, in Gammons Lane, learned all about Eid and why Muslims across the globe spend 30 days fasting prior to the celebration.

The day began with a guest speaker who came in to deliver an assembly about the month of Ramadan and the importance of Eid.

The children were dressed up in their traditional clothes from all around the world, and spent the day making Eid lanterns, baking cookies and even trying their hand at designing their own henna patterns.

Later that day the children and their families took part in an Eid picnic.

Due to the generosity of the community at Beechfield School, more than £500 was raised and will be sent to the British Red Cross for the victims of Grenfell Tower.

The day was declared a success by religious education co-ordinator Miss Ali, who said: “The whole day was greatly appreciated by all children, teachers and parents who learnt a great deal about Eid, all whilst raising a great deal of money for a very worthy cause which felt close to the hearts of many at Beechfield School.”
