A camera club that has been running for more than 100 years launched its new season on Thursday evening (Sep 7).

Watford Camera Club was originally founded in 1903 but the archives only date back to the 1940s after the club reformed following a break for the Second World War.

The club is currently 60 people strong but welcomes new members, from complete novices to expert or professional photographers and anyone else interested in photography. They meet every Thursday at the Friends Meeting House in Church Road, Watford.

Club and committee member Diane Richardson says: “The club is a dynamic and diverse group of fun-loving photographers of all ages and abilities, ranging from 17 years of age to over 70. All of us have a ‘young at heart’ attitude.

“The club aims to enable everyone to enhance their photographic knowledge and skills and to enjoy each other’s company. To this end we hold regular workshops, events out and competitions but always with an emphasis on enjoyment. In other words, we don’t take ourselves too seriously.”

The programme for the 2017/18 season includes regular monthly internal competitions and practical evenings in which they learn a new technique or practice one not used often.

There will be several guest speakers who give illustrated talks about their specialist subjects, including macro photography and photographing UK wildlife.

The club holds trips around the UK and Diane says: “With London on our doorstep we frequently travel into the capital to see exhibitions, followed up by an evening of street or architectural photography.”

She adds: “For those that prefer not to enter competitions but still receive feedback on their images, there are plenty of opportunities outside of internal competitions.

We host a public annual exhibition and encourage members to apply for photographic awards and distinctions that are external to the camera club.”
