A number of sinkholes which have opened up on a canal-side path pose a danger to walkers, commuters and children on their half-term holiday, according to one narrowboat resident.

Martin Miller, whose vessel is moored near Batchworth lock in Rickmansworth, says he is concerned about how the pathway running alongside the Grand Union Canal has been allowed to disintegrate over the past few years, despite repeated requests for repairs directed at the Canal and River Trust.

Just the other day he was sweeping leaves from the roof of his narrowboat when a sinkhole opened up beneath his feet.

“It is getting to the point now where it is becoming a complete and utter health and safety nightmare,” he said.

“The authorities just don’t want to know. We are constantly told that nothing can be done.

“They say all the right things but their concern is just inaction in my eyes, so my frustration has got to this point.

“People pay money to be here so we don’t expect these kind of problems. It is not a one-man vendetta. This is a big issue.”

With no lamps lighting the way after dark, Mr Miller says the path should be closed on health and safety grounds until the root of the problem is found and fixed.

He added that, with schoolchildren currently on their half-term break, the pathway is posing an even greater risk, especially to younger users.

The Canal and River Trust has been contacted for comment.
