People have shared their fond memories of Cuffley Camp.

The adventure camp is due to shut after Hertfordshire County Council pulled its funding.

Hundreds have been left heartbroken - and these pictures show why.

Graham Gray, a former pupil at Shepherds Junior School, in Mill End Rickmansworth, went for a week in 1960 and 1961.

Recounting his memories, he said: "Our class teacher, Mrs McNabb, and another teacher, Mr Owen, took us. I was nearly 10 years old the first time. There were a few campsites and we stayed at Justice Hill camp.

"It was a very exciting experience for us young children. I remember my mum sewing a white bedsheet so that I could pack it with straw on arrival to make a palliasse.

"It was to be my mattress for the week. We had to keep our tents tidy which was a good discipline.

"There were showers at the camp but our toilet was a deep hole in the ground adjacent to our camp.

"We had our meals in the canteen but on one occasion in each week our teacher cooked sausages over a fire.

"We took nature walks in the woods and must have undertaken other educational activities which I’m afraid have been lost from my memory over the last 56 odd years.

"The highlight of the week was the campfire on the last evening where children from all the campsites came together to sing songs.

"A wonderful experience combining discipline, camaraderie and knowledge. I very much hope the Cuffley Camp can be saved for future generations."

David Woodbridge, who also went to Shepherds Lane Junior School with teacher Mr Goodfellow, recounted the happy time he spent there.

"I am sorry to hear of the forthcoming closure of this children's camp as I attended it in the 60's.

"I had a great time  with the other kids there.

"On the last day there all the other school camps in the camp sat around a large fire and sang songs then they held a award ceremony one child from each school got the outstanding Merit award and three others were given a book token, including me.

"Then it was not long before we all went to different secondary school's and hardly seeing each over during lessons or break times, and growing up."
