Mrs Thornhill believes Mayor Taylor will “strengthen” their party.
She said: “It is an understatement to say I am absolutely delighted and I think the town is in great hands.
“I have every confidence in him as he has grown throughout this campaign and shown patience.
“This will strengthen things for the Liberal Democrats.”
Reflecting over her 16 years as mayor, Mrs Thornhill added she had no regrets.
She said: “It has been an amazing job. There is no job description when you start so you have to make the choices you believe in and take all the bad with the good.”
