As we approach the 70th Birthday of the NHS, I really want to celebrate the fantastic work of our local health service, and commend them for all their hard work. NHS staff provide excellent, compassionate care to us all every day. We’ve all been in a situation where we’ve had to rely on the NHS, to look after us or our family and friends. In my case, I’ve also seen the local health service care for my constituents. But it’s at times like this when we realise the true value of the jewel of our public services.

I also want to celebrate the patient safety journey which Watford General Hospital has been on. We’ve seen sustained improvements across the board, with the trust that runs it moving out of special measures earlier this year. This is not just down to the hard work of the fantastic leadership team, as all of the staff there have worked tirelessly to drive up standards.

I’m pleased that Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt recently accepted my invitation to come to Watford General and speak to staff face-to-face about redevelopment plans. Our hospital staff are first class, but now we need the first class facilities to match. I will be working closely with the Department for Health and NHS Staff to make sure we have the funds we need.
