A new programme designed to tackle male obesity is kicking off in September.

‘Shape Up’ is a 12-week programme in Bushey that aims to combat the growing problem of obesity amongst middle-aged men in Hertfordshire, although it is targeted for people aged between 18-65 with a BMI of 30 or more.

Hertsmere Borough Council says 63 per cent of adults living in the borough are carrying excess weight and this is predicted to rise.

Participants will meet for weekly 90 minute sessions at St Margaret’s school. The sessions will consist of a 30 minute educational segment and 60 minutes of physical activity.

Shape Up has already seen more than 850 men across Hertfordshire engage in the programme.

Cllr Caroline Clapper, responsible for health and leisure at Hertsmere Borough Council, said: “Promoting healthy weight and increasing physical activity is an important priority for the council. We are delighted that Watford FC CSE Trust is continuing to deliver a course for men in Bushey and we encourage all men who fit within the criteria to sign up.

“Shape Up has already changed lives by encouraging men to think about the causes of obesity and how, by making changes to their lifestyle, they can reduce the risk of obesity related diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.”

The free programme will begin on September 26 and will run weekly on Wednesday nights between 7.30pm and 9pm at St Margaret’s school in Merry Hill Road, Bushey.
