An activist campaigning to unite communities is appealing to minorities to speak up about their experiences.

Defend Unity founder, Connor, from Three Rivers is encouraging people from LGBTQ and BAME populations to get in touch with him about what it is like living in Watford and the surrounding area.

Conner said: “What I need is general feedback from people about how safe they feel in their own communities.

“I’d like to ask them how they feel about the range of services currently on offer to people from minority backgrounds; services from the council, health services and their quality of life in general."

He added: "Communities are built by people, and act to serve people. A community cannot be formed if people don't come together under a shared cause, interest or trait.

"For years the minority communities in Hertfordshire have struggled with poor representation at all levels of government and society. Now we have the opportunity to right these wrongs, with supportive people in our local governments, local businesses and a rising number of minorities making Hertfordshire their home.

"Still, these communities cannot be formed without people, and that is why we need you. No matter what minority background you come from, and no matter where you live in the county and what you do, we want to hear from you.

"Tell us how we can improve your quality of life, whether that be through improved health services, greater representation in our businesses and local authorities; or by simply giving you the chance to come together.

"Only together, can we truly make Hertfordshire 'The county of opportunity'."

Shop worker Connor, 20, also said he is keen to find out what sort of social opportunities are available to minorities in Watford and Three Rivers.

He spoke to the Watford Observer after racist graffiti was taken down by a community in South Oxhey, last week.

Connor met with Watford Mayor, Peter Taylor, in July to discuss council training schemes, charity involvement and a forum for affected groups.
Mr Taylor said: “I met Connor in July, along with councillor Karen Collett.

“We had a really good chat about the work he is doing. It is so important that people feel safe and welcomed in our town.

“We have agreed to meet again to discuss how we can work together in the future.”
