A man and woman born a day apart have both celebrated their 100th birthday.

Douglas Hawes and Vera Coffin live at the Prince Michael of Kent Court care home in Stratford Road, Watford.

Mr Hawes was born on September 1 and Ms Coffin on September 2, just a day apart from each other in 1918, shortly before the end of the first World War.

Both 100-year-olds celebrated their days with a party at the home attended by their families.

Mr Hawes was visited by more than 50 of his family and friends, including his ten-year-old great-grandson, with whom he shares a birthday.

He said: “It was wonderful turning 100.

“I’ve had a good life and my family is definitely the most important thing for me.”

Ms Coffin, was visited by her family to celebrate turning 100 in a party organised by the care home's staff.

A Tottenham Hotspurs fan since she was eight-years-old Ms Coffin received a surprise congratulations letter from Tottenham Manager Mauricio Pochettino.

She said: “I feel no different now to when I was 50.

“My passion for Tottenham hasn’t changed since I was an eight year old girl.”

Activities coordinator, Tracy Lydon helped organise the birthday parties.

She said: “It was such a privilege to celebrate the 100th Birthdays of Douglas and Vera.

“We hosted a special party for each of them so that their families could celebrate with them.

“A 100th birthday is such a massive milestone and we’re just glad everyone had a great time.”
