A selfless 13-year-old who makes sure her disabled little brother is included in "everything" has won an award.

Laura Sclafani-Murphy, of Watford, helps look after Liam, who has Down's syndrome, chronic epilepsy and seizures.

But despite his challenges, she regularly goes above and beyond for him.

She was awarded the Silver Award in the carer category in the BBC3 counties community award, for the support she gives.

She said: "When we got to the theatre I didn't really know what was happening, when I found out I had won an award I was shocked but as it sunk in I was very happy.

"Liam is in hospital a lot which, apart from getting to ride in the ambulance, can be frustrating but I try to do fun things for him like finding videos he likes on the iPad or reading him stories."

She supports her parents and brother by getting emergency equipment without complaint, including oxygen tanks and suction machines.

She jumps into Liam’s home bed and hospital bed to support him watching his favourite videos on YouTube. She will also sing to him and practice her singing homework with him.

This summer, she took him to the library on her own conviction to sign him up for the summer reading challenge.

She did this by reading him his books and then brought him back to the library and helped him summarise the books so he could get his certificate.

Her mum, Angelina, said: "She is passionate about ensuring Liam is included in community activities."
