A tribute to soldiers who served and died in the First World War has been restored.

The iconic oak war memorial at the corner of Mildred Avenue and Harwoods Road was so badly decayed that the names on it were illegible.

But the cross, which had been there for 90 years, was replaced with a ceremony last Sunday.

It was dedicated by the Bishop of Bedford, the Right Reverend Richard Atkinson.

The project was funded by contributions from the War Memorials Trust, the church and councillors.

The Bishop was joined by the Vicar, Reverend Geoffrey Calvert, councillors, members of the congregation, family members of those whose deaths are recorded on the cross, neighbours and members of the Syrian Jacobite Orthodox Church who worship at St. Michaels as their home church.

The Royal British Legion provided an honour party.
