Schoolchildren from across the county gathered together to launch a campaign to improve the environment.

The 16 schools from Rickmansworth, Chorleywood, Croxley and the surrounding area all met at Three Rivers House yesterday to learn about and discuss recycling.

The schools involved form the Riversmeet Consortium.

On the day, the children heard from recycling strategy manager Jennie Probert about sorting materials and took part in a session making pieces of art from bits of card and plastic, led by WRAP (Watford Recycling Arts Partnership).

Each school will now go back and review how they can reduce waste in their own area by running their own project, reporting back at an event in 2019.

Liberal Democrat Cllr Alex Michaels said: “What an inspiring day with students from all 16 schools so engaged in the environment.

“They have endless energy and enthusiasm for our environmental theme and it’s inspiring to see.

“The students are absolutely committed to being part of the solution and have clear ideas about the role they have to play to send less waste to landfill.”

Conservative Cllr Joanna Clemens added: "It was fantastic to see so many engaged and involved Three Rivers school pupils at the council.

"Their suggestions at the end of the workshop showed a real reflection and understanding both of the environmental issues we face and the way democracy and communities work, and I look forward to seeing many of the same faces at future events and seeing their ideas bear fruit."

Duncan Roberts, headteacher at Little Green School said: “It was an absolute delight and pleasure to see pupil representatives from every one of our consortium members driven to protect and improve the environment.

“I look forward to seeing the incredible impact these children have on their schools and wider community. Thank you to everyone involved in making the event such a spirited launch."
