An abusive ex-boyfriend who led police on a 70mph chase after burgling his former partner’s home has been jailed.

Thomas Wong, 31, of Brook Avenue, Wembley, stole a Sony music system from the house in the Holywell area of Watford before police attempted to stop him in Pinner Road on August 16.

But Wong ignored the sirens and put lives at risk as he ran red lights and travelled at speeds of 70 mph along residential streets before he was boxed in by pursuing officers in Ruislip.

The pursuit lasted five minutes.

Police say Wong smelled of alcohol but he failed to provide a breath sample and was arrested.

He was bailed and the following day, he tried calling his ex-partner several times making threats to harm her, leaving several threatening voicemail messages. It broke his conditions and he was arrested on suspicion of harassment.

Wong was charged with burglary, driving dangerously in a public place, failing to provide a breath sample, and harassment.

He was remanded in custody until he appeared at St Albans Crown Court on September 24 where he pleaded guilty to all offences.

At the same court yesterday, Wong was sentenced to 21 months in prison.

He received a 14 month sentence for burglary and a 12 month sentence for dangerous driving as well as a two month sentence for harassment.

But his sentence was reduced by 25 per cent due to his early guilty plea.

Wong was banned from driving for two years and has been given an indefinite restraining order which bans him from contacting his ex-partner.

PC Alex Akers, from Hertfordshire Constabulary’s domestic abuse investigation and safeguarding unit, said: “Within hours of being released on bail Wong was breaching his conditions by repeatedly calling his ex-partner and leaving threatening voicemail messages causing her distress .

“Wong also put members of the public at risk when he refused to stop for police. Thankfully no-one was injured and officers were able to stop the pursuit fairly quickly by boxing him in.”
