The Elected Mayor of Watford has praised work carried out on a newly renovated high street in anticipation of its completion.

Peter Taylor said the people of Watford could look forward to a “safer and cleaner” pedestrianised area when the High Street and Market Street improvement works are completed on October 27.

The town centre enhancement, led by Watford Borough Council in partnership with Hertfordshire County Council and Watford BID, was undertaken to provide better access for shoppers, to cut down on pollution and to create more space and to allow for cyclists.

Bollards are in place to prevent vehicles illegally driving through the town centre, in turn allowing for smoother bus services.

The council plan to install more bus stops starting with a new E stop near NatWest.

Mr Taylor said: “Autumn 2018 is a landmark moment for the town, with the opening of the newly renovated High Street and the grand intu extension, including the 86,000 square foot Debenhams superstore.

“I’m grateful to everyone for their patience during the High Street works so far. It is so important that we have a vibrant and thriving centre.

“This upgrade will make the High Street feel safer and cleaner, with more space and less traffic.”

The improvement work which coincides with the intu development, also includes upgrading bus shelters, a new taxi rank behind the High Street and permanent disabled parking bays.
